U.S. Army Picatinny Arsenal – Building 93, ARDEC
Wharton, NJ
Picatinny Arsenal, was founded in 1880 as Picatinny Powder Depot to originally produce gun powder. This American military research and manufacturing facility is located on 6,400 acres in Morris County, New Jersey. The Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center(ARDEC) is the Army’s “Center of Lethality,” a designation reflecting its important role as the provider of more than 90 percent of the Army’s lethal armaments and munitions to United States’ warfighters. It is known for developing the ubiquitous Picatinny rail, as well as being the Army’s center of expertise for small arms cartridge ammunition.
During a long process, AAWD was interviewed along with several other companies to take on the task, and eventually chosen as the contractor of choice. Strict background checks were done on all employees who would work on the site prior to starting.
A crucial systematic approach was required at all times from entry onto the base, to removing existing windows, due to the sensitive, and at times top secret locations involved. AAWD removed all existing Aluminum windows in ARDEC and replaced them with 235 Heavy Commercial Aluminum Fixed windows with specialty glass coatings for privacy. Not only is this a high security, sensitive building, but it also remained fully operational with military staff while work was underway. Work was performed both from within offices and using a boom from the exterior. This project required daily unannounced security screenings by military staff of our crew members.
We completed the project ahead of schedule and within budget to the satisfaction of all involved.
