The Beacon

Jersey City, NJ

The Beacon is a massive mixed-use development located on a 14-acre site on Bergen Hill, in Jersey City, New Jersey. The Beacon occupies the former Jersey City Medical Center’s complex which was located to the site in 1882. The rehabilitation of the complex created 2,000,000 square feet of residential and retail space, approximately 1,200 luxury residences and 80,000 square feet of retail space.

Conversion of the ten federally landmarked, Art Deco buildings on the site was the largest residential restoration project in the country and the largest in the history of New Jersey. The project goal was to retain historical features of the exterior façades and public interior spaces, estimated to cost over $350million at the time. The Beacon is listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, as the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the state.

The challenge of working with dozens of trades was monumental, as was the approval process to match the sight lines of the former historic windows. AAWD accepted the challenge and successfully installed over 8,000 Historical Aluminum Double Hung Windows in a variety of custom colors throughout the project. The project was completed on time and on budget, proving that teamwork makes the dream work!

American Architectural Window and Door efforts encompassed the completion of The Paramount Building in early 2014, next The Tower by late 2014, The Criterion in 2015, and The Hague by early 2016. For details of each of these buildings, please see these individual projects in our gallery.
